This new
service offers both gifted education and enrichment to
all students. A two-pronged approach to gifted
education, ALPHA and DELTA
will meet the needs of the high ability learner in
either a humanities based- or math/science-based
curriculum.
ALPHA will focus on classic literature,
poetry, art, history & etymology. A rigorous program,
ALPHA will build student’s vocabulary and provide
comprehensive writing instruction.
DELTA will provide inquiry based problem
solving and abstract thinking skills. Math applications
with early algebraic and geometric concepts will be
covered along with an empirical application of the
scientific method. Students will display their work at
an annual Project Night and will participate in the NY
Math League.
EPSILON provides school wide and
student-specific enrichment options. All things are
possible with this service including, but not limited
to, whole class enrichment, thematic workshops, guided
independent studies, and Renzulli workshops for
students.
ALPHA
& DELTA are currently serving fourth, fifth and sixth grade
students. Students must qualify for the program by
scoring in the 97th percentile or above on an achievement
test and by meeting criteria on the School and College
Ability Test (SCAT).
Class
instruction is one-half day or one whole day per week
depending on district choice. There is a balance of
individual, small group and whole class activities and
projects. Students are provided with challenging,
hands-on activities and experiences. Local
experts are asked to visit the classroom, and a field trip
might be taken to enhance student learning when it
complements the curriculum.
Student
work is assessed throughout the year by a variety of
methods. The purpose of assessing work is to provide
feedback to students to help them grow academically.
Performance portfolios are used to track student progress
over the course of the academic year. ALPHA & DELTA
do not
use formal grading systems, however, three evaluations
are completed for each student.
ALPHA &
DELTA
offer communication in the form of: orientation and open
house night for parents; bi-monthly newsletters to parents
and home school staff; e-mail news bulletins; student evaluations; and showcase
events.
