Immigration
An
interdisciplinary unit focusing on history, arts,
technology, math and science. This unit looks at
immigration, particularly in
New York City
, during the 1800s to the early 20th century.
What was happening in the world, beginning in 1820
(when the
U.S.
started keeping such records) that caused so many millions
of people to travel across a vast ocean in barely
sea-worthy vessels to come to
America
? What were the various groups of immigrants running
toward or running away from?
Engineering Unit
An
introduction of Earth Materials and Materials Engineering.
The focus will be on the engineering design
process, with emphasis on materials and their properties
and earth materials as natural resources.
The students will be introduced to a story about
the Great Wall of China and continue with the challenge to
build a wall out of rock and mortar as well as other
natural materials found in the earth.
Literature
The
purpose of the Literature unit this year is to integrate
appropriate children’s’ literature with our
Immigration unit. Each
book chosen describes the hardships faced by the various
ethic groups as they acclimate themselves within the
American culture. |
